EPE Regatta - Important Details - Posted: August 22, 2004 - 10:30 PM Quote and reply
Transportation
This is left up to individuals/crews/boats to arrange. It is a four hour drive to Largs. Best way is to drive to Perth - Stirling and cross through Glasgow if you're outside rush hours or go around it. Largs Marina is just south of Largs itself, can't miss it. We're all meeting in the club house for drinks. There is a downloadable map on the 'Advice' page from Main Menu.

Food
Included in the trip is breakfast on the Saturday morning and dinner on Saturday night. The rest is required to be arranged by the individual skippers/crews, for Lunches on Sat and Sun, breakfast on Sunday morning and some snacks for underway. Remember to bring plenty of water. Soups and warm drinks are a good idea during the day in case of a cold weekend.

On the Friday night we'll leave it up to the teams to arrange something. Nardini's restaurant and bar (01475 6866840) in Largs is always good and worth pre-booking. If you arrive late, so get a snack on the way or ask for a table right away at the Nardini's. They stop serving food after 21.00 hours.
Breakfast will be in two shifts on the Saturday morning 07:30
(Boats 4,6,8,13,17,19) and 08:00 (Boats 22,27,32,33,39,40).
On Saturday evening the Buffet is at 19:30.

Clothing
3 things to remember Space, Warmth, and a change of clothing (a jacket will be provided). The West coast of Scotland can be a wet, cold, and windy place in September (with the occasional weak sunshine glinting off steely gray water etc.). This means that you must bring plenty of warm clothing.

This should include waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, and a woolen hat. Some clothes may get absolutely soaked so you should bring spares. The other important thing to remember is to wear soft soled shoes which will not mark the decks of the boats. Stowage space will be limited, so pack your clothes in soft bags (not suitcases) to make it easier to cram them into odd nooks and crannies. There is no point in bringing anything too smart as you'll merely make the rest of us look shabby by comparison. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag. If you do not have a sleeping bag then either bring blankets or an old quilt/duvet. Pillows are also worthwhile bringing.

Wet gear hire - Sailing Gear can be hired from the Sunsail for approx ?5 per day. However, they do not provide boots. If the weather is looking good or moderate rain then typical hiking gear will be sufficient. Skippers should find out from their crew who may need gear and then arrange this directly with Sunsail either in advance or on the day - remember it may be late to arrange when you get down there on Friday evening. Event "souvenir" jackets will be distributed on the Friday evening by one of the committee to the skippers.

Money
Each boat crew is responsible for dividing up the cost of food and drink, and of any diesel the boat uses. If there are any breakages then you must tell the skipper. Damage or losses will be divided amongst the crew (winch handles cost £30 each by the way, and do not float!!).

Final event costs are £115 for Pecten Club Members and £125 for everyone else.

Cheques made out to the Pecten Club ana handed to the skippers on or before the Friday night. We'd like the skippers to hand over the cheques to the committee on the Friday night (we can swap for the jackets!!!).

Insurance terms
As usual the skippers will be required to leave a cheque or credit card number with the charter company when taking the boat over. This is in part to cover the cost of Insurance Excess in the event of the boat being damaged enough to make an insurance claim. Again the skipper should ensure that this is covered between the crew if it is invoked. The insurance excess amount is ?1,000. Exact details can be obtained from Sunsail directly if you want to check this before the weekend.

Tarbert details.
We will be allocated pontoon space by the harbour master, fees are covered in the weekend price. Boats will need to raft up as usual.

The Victoria Hotel is the location of the entertainment and catering on Sat evening, and is a very short walk away from the berthing area. Showers may be available at the Hotelon request. Be prepared to go without if necessary or jump overboard like in recent years...

Evenings Entertainments
The fun starts at 19:30, with a Buffet, followed by a short prize giving, and then a band/disco until close. Don't forget your dancing shoes. Fancy Dress is at the discretion of each boat.

Boat Presentations
- as usual no-one should go home empty handed. Each boat will be required to provide a prize - of a low value (£10) - suitable for another boat. The rotation of presentations and which boat will present to which will be decided by finishing order. Be prepared to have a prize ready, and you must tell all the other crews why this prize should be valued by the receiving crew - this can be a song, verse, poem, or just a plain old verbal explanation. Get the thinking caps on, ......but no Epics, please!!!

The 'Race'
This year the race will be a little different in that it will start some 14 miles from Largs at 1300. This has several advantages. The race will be ca 15NM which will provide more options in the event of low winds, will give us more control over our arrival time at Tarbert and provide the crews with a 15 mile shake down gettting to the start. Race details will be provided at the Skipper's briefing on Saturday morning at 0830.

Sunday
Every boat is free to wake up, have breakfast and sail back to Largs. This is about 25NM and will take you approximately five hours by motor or sail. The committee will check if there are any boats that are willing to race. For those that wish to a suggested race format can be found within this forum under a separate heading. The boats should be back around 17.00 hours in Largs.

Your Crew
There is a downloadable Crew List on the 'Advice' page from Main Menu.

Let's hope for wind and sun!!

Organisers
