A cracking sunny morning with K worrying through the night for us, allowing the rest of us to get a good night's sleep and C reporting earplugs a boon and the bed comfortable, and no serious hangover on a Sunday am, all new indeed. J was asking all his questions and we produced the obligatory full english for a great start to our day. Sea state was moderate, wind was 18kt True and off we went on a training run or beam reach, great fun, we did kiss the Maplin Edge for a while but headed home and enjoyed a full 2 hour beat back up the Medway keeping up 5kt average, and introducing J and C to tacking between the larger ships and their confined channel plus a 1km exclsion zone in front of them. Only when tide turned completely and we started going completely in reverse on Long Reach did we gun the engine and head for our mooring. This was one of the best bits, my wife and I have finally worked out a mooring strategy and with 4 on board now was the time to test it out. We have a trot mooring but in a very tidal part of the river, so as soon as power is lost the tide on keel effect cannot be held by a person. Anyway, we pick up marriage lines amidships, secure front and aft immediately, only looped over cleats and then deal with fore/aft mooring lines at our leisure. Cannot see what the trouble was before? Works a treat with one to hook the marriage line and one each for fore and aft. (if any one wants to know what an earth we are talking about, look at the Upnor SC website). I think we hooked two people new to sailing, I think they will come again and they will be very welcome, the contribution in terms of crewing, companionship and banter was excellent and I just thank you David for linking us up."
